Text Highlighter

A Chrome extension for focused reading with voice follow-along, teleprompter, and transliteration for Tigrinya (Ge'ez script)

Features Voice Follow Voice Commands (ድምጺ) Teleprompter Transliteration Shortcuts (ኣጠቓቕማ) Settings Install

What it does

Text Highlighter places a visible box around the current word or line and lets you step through text at your own pace. It includes voice follow mode that listens to you read aloud and advances the highlight automatically, a teleprompter for silent reading, and Tiglish transliteration for Ge'ez script.

Voice Follow

Read aloud and the highlight follows your voice in real time. Works with English and Tigrinya. Includes voice commands for hands-free control.

Teleprompter

Auto-scrolls text for silent reading. Adjust speed with arrow keys. Pause and resume with spacebar.

Tiglish Transliteration

Shows Latin pronunciation below Ge'ez text (e.g. ሰላም → selam). Helps readers learning the script.

Smooth Highlighting

The highlight glides between positions with adjustable animation speed. Supports outline, underline, and fill styles.

Multi-line Mode

Highlight 1 to 8 lines at once. In voice mode, the highlight slides by one line at a time.

Resume Reading

Remembers where you left off. Refresh or close the page — the highlight resumes from your last position.

Verse & Psalm Jump

Type a number to jump directly to a verse or psalm on supported Bible sites.

Works Anywhere

Built-in support for Google Slides, AbbaSelama, GeezExperience, and BibleGateway. Activate on any other site too.

Voice follow mode

Press V to start voice follow. A green mic indicator appears in the top-right corner showing ትግ (Tigrinya) or EN (English). Read aloud and the highlight advances automatically.

Voice commands

While voice follow is active, say "Ok reader" (or "Hey reader") followed by a command:

"Ok reader, skip 3 lines"Jump forward by N lines
"Ok reader, skip up 2 lines"Jump backward by N lines
"Ok reader, restart"Jump back to the first word
"Ok reader, stop"Turn off voice follow
"Verse 5"Jump to verse 5 (GeezExperience, BibleGateway)
"Psalm 23"Jump to Psalm 23 (AbbaSelama)
"Chapter 3"Navigate to chapter 3 (BibleGateway)

Verse, psalm, and chapter commands work without the wake phrase — just say "verse 5" directly. All other commands need "Ok reader" first.

Teleprompter mode

Press P to start the teleprompter. The page scrolls at a steady pace for silent reading. Use / to adjust speed, Space to pause and resume.

Tiglish transliteration

Press G to show Latin pronunciation below each Ge'ez word (e.g. ሰላም → selam). Useful for readers who can speak Tigrinya but are still learning to read the Ge'ez script. Press G again to hide.
